Entering Return F Data - Law Enforcement Officers Assaulted

Line-of-Duty felonious or accidental killings or assaults of Law Enforcement Officers are reported in the statistics entered on Return A for 1.a Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 1.b. Manslaughter by negligence, and Aggravated Assault.  Additional information is then reported on the LEOKA form (Law Enforcement Officers Killed or Assaulted).  These figures can be entered on Return F.  The data entry form for Return F follows the layout of the FBI standard paper return.

The Return F screen consists of several separate sections; Type Of Activity, Personal Injury and Assaults by Time. Type of Activity is further broken down into Assaults by Weapon, Assaults by Assignment Type and Police Assaults Cleared.

Assaults by Weapon consists of several columns of information which must be entered. The statistics are entered by Type of Activity. You should make sure that all of the data collected is present before entering the next Section or moving to the next data entry page. The Type of Activities applicable for this form are listed down the left side of the form. Navigation between columns can be accomplished by using the Tab key to move to the next column for which you have data or using the mouse.

If you have entered this screen during the course of entering a month of data, there will be pre-filled, information in the "Total Assaults by Weapon (A)" column, in the total line. This information was input by the system based upon the information entered on Return A for Officers Assaulted. You must enter the appropriate breakdown of the total number found in column A into the columns that detail the Type of Weapon used in the assault. This can be accomplished by pressing Tab until you reach the Type of Activity line for which the assault is to be recorded.

The first available data entry column is the "Firearm (B)" column. Enter the correct statistical data and Tab to the column "Knife or Other Cutting Instrument (C)". Continue to use the Tab key to process through all of the remaining Weapon Type columns, "Other Dangerous Weapon (D)" and "Hands, Fists, Feet, etc. (E)" entering statistics where necessary.  If there are no statistics for a column, it can be left blank and the system will fill the column with zero during processing. Please note that "Total Assaults by Weapon (A)" column will be calculated by the system and you will not be able to enter data into this column.

The further breakdown of the Officers Assaulted continues with the entry of data for the Assaults by Assignment Type. The statistics are entered by Type of Activity.
